Chapter Twenty

It was after midnight when Carli arrived back home after leaving Reid’s townhouse. They’d had cheesecake all right, and she seriously doubted it would ever be the same again using a fork and plate. Reid had kissed her good-bye at the door and said he would see her at the hospital the next day. Carli knew they were both going to pay for their late night the next morning but she thought it would be well worth it!

Carli had shot Jillian a text message earlier in the evening telling her she’d be late and to not wait up unless she needed to. When Carli opened the door everything was quiet, so she assumed Jillian was already in bed. She hated they hadn’t been able to spend any time together, but she knew Jillian had plans with her mother all day and into the evening. Jillian’s time with her mom wasn’t horrible usually, but with new husband number four in the picture Carli wondered how it had gone.

As Carli passed Jillian’s door she stepped closer, and not hearing anything. she made her way upstairs to her own room. Since she’d taken a shower at Reid’s she was ready to crash. Thoughts of her shower led to thoughts of Reid in the shower with her, and she felt her cheeks grow warm. For heaven’s sake, I’m in my own house and alone. Embarrassment is way past due! Carli had to admit she wasn’t really embarrassed. It was more like it had been a totally new experience for her, and she’d had no idea it would end up being that amazing!

As she lay in bed Carli replayed the whole night’s events in her mind. Her attraction to Reid was beyond anything she could understand and was tired of trying to. From the moment she’d laid eyes on him in the ED conference room there’d been something about him and there still was. No matter how hard they’d both tried to fight it, him more than her, it hadn’t gone away. Finally at the club Saturday night they’d both just given in and had now spent the most exhilarating twenty-four hours of Carli’s life together. She thought there should be something to say for that however, naïve she was not. She knew that a lot of people hooked up with someone, had a great week-end and then never saw the person again. Deep down she really didn’t feel that was the case with her and Reid, but she also knew this thing was short lived. As she finally dozed off she told herself once again to enjoy the time they had and let the rest go.

Carli’s alarm went off far earlier than she wanted the next morning! It was the same time as any other work day, but her night had been a lot shorter than normal. Carli knew another shower would be the only thing to get her going, so she trudged that way. Unfortunately, this one didn’t hold the same appeal as the one last night.
